Rule summary

  • No questions that are in the FAQ: FAQ's are here for a reason. If you ask one, it will be removed and you'll get banned temporarily. Usually 3 days unless it's egregious. If you argue about it, the ban will be permanent.
  • Don't be a dick: We're all people. If you don't have anything nice to say, just let it go and get on with your day.
  • No advertising: Advertising a site or product is not what this sub is about.
  • No self promotion: Posts that lead back to a personal or business website unless specifically asked for by OP.
  • No bad advice: This is no place for bad advice. Advising the use of products not made for vehicles, using auto products in a way they are not designed, etc.
  • No low effort posts.: Questions about the best this or recommended that, or how do I get started will be deleted. Be as specific as possible with your questions. i.e. "What is the easiest to apply ceramic coating?" Not just "What is the best ceramic coating?"
  • No pricing questions: Pricing questions are too localized for anyone to answer it knowledgeably. No mas.
  • No political/relegion/weird stuff.: Self-explanatory. This sub is about detailing and detailing related items/questions, none of those other items apply here and will result in a timeout to help you understand that followed by a perma-ban if you still don’t get it.

Works well

  • A specific troubleshooting question that names the exact vehicle, the exact problem, and what you already tried, so it cannot be mistaken for a FAQ duplicate or a low effort best-of post.
  • A detailed answer to someone else's specific question, using only products made for vehicles and used the way they are designed, which respects “No bad advice”.
  • A before and after style writeup of a detailing job you did on your own car, shared purely to help others, with no links back to your site because of “No self promotion”.
  • A narrow question in the shape the rules ask for, like asking which ceramic coating is easiest to apply for a first timer with a specific paint condition, instead of asking what is the best one.

Avoid

  • Asking any question that is already answered in the FAQ post, because “No questions that are in the FAQ” means removal plus a temporary ban of usually 3 days.
  • Arguing with moderators about a FAQ ban, because the rules say arguing turns a temporary ban into a permanent one.
  • Posting links or pitches that lead back to your own site or product, because “No advertising” and “No self promotion” both cover that.
  • Dropping your product link into a comment even when nobody asked, since the exception only applies when the original poster specifically asks for it.
  • Recommending products not made for vehicles or using car products in ways they were not designed for, because “No bad advice” removes those posts.
  • Posting vague questions like what is the best ceramic coating or how do I get started, because “No low effort posts.” deletes them and the survival tip says to be specific instead, like asking what is the easiest to apply ceramic coating with your situation described in detail.

What r/Detailing Is For

This community is a help desk for car detailing questions. People come here to ask how to clean, protect, and care for their vehicles, and the public description says the sub exists for finding help with detailing questions. The description also tells every visitor to read the FAQ post before asking anything, because duplicate questions get deleted and the person who asks one gets temporarily banned. So the room is made up of detailers and car owners who want specific, practical questions answered, and the rules make clear it is not a place for advertising, politics, religion, or anything off topic.

Rules That Matter Before Posting

The rule that decides everything here is “No questions that are in the FAQ”, because it comes with a temporary ban of usually 3 days, and arguing about it turns the ban permanent. “No advertising” and “No self promotion” are the two rules that end most marketing attempts, since posts that lead back to a personal or business website are not allowed unless the original poster specifically asked for it. “No low effort posts.” matters for anyone hoping to start a helpful thread, because vague best-of or how-do-I-get-started questions get deleted. “No bad advice” matters if you answer questions, because recommending products not made for vehicles or using products in ways they were not designed for is banned. “No pricing questions” removes anything about what things cost, and “Don't be a dick” sets the tone for every reply you write.

What To Post

A good post here is a specific detailing question that is not answered in the FAQ. The rule “No low effort posts.” even shows the shape it wants, so instead of asking what is the best ceramic coating, you ask something like what is the easiest to apply ceramic coating, with your situation spelled out. Describe the vehicle, the condition, what you have already tried, and what result you want. If you are a founder, the respectful play is to answer other people's questions with genuinely correct advice, follow “No bad advice”, and never drop a link, because “No self promotion” only allows links when the original poster specifically asked for one. Read the FAQ completely first, since that is the survival tip that matters most here.

What To Avoid

The fastest way out is asking a FAQ question, which gets your post deleted and gets you temporarily banned, usually 3 days, and arguing about it makes the ban permanent. Advertising a site or product is out, and so is any post that leads back to your own website unless the original poster specifically asked for it. Vague questions get deleted, including best-of requests, recommended-that requests, and how do I get started posts. Pricing questions are banned outright. Bad advice gets removed, especially recommending products not made for vehicles or using auto products in ways they were not designed for. Politics, religion, and weird off topic stuff bring a timeout and then a permanent ban if you keep going. Being rude breaks “Don't be a dick”.

Common questions about r/Detailing

Can I mention my detailing product or service if I keep it casual?

No. “No advertising” says advertising a site or product is not what this sub is about, and “No self promotion” bans posts that lead back to a personal or business website.

What if someone asks me directly for a link?

Only if the original poster specifically asked for it, which is the exact exception written into “No self promotion”.

Can I ask what people charge for a detailing job?

No. “No pricing questions” says pricing is too localized for anyone to answer knowledgeably, so those posts are not allowed.

Can I ask for advice at all?

Yes, but it must be specific. “No low effort posts.” deletes general best-of or how-do-I-get-started questions, so describe your exact situation and ask a narrow question.

What happens if my question is already answered somewhere?

The public description says duplicate questions get deleted and the asker gets temporarily banned, so search the FAQ and recent posts before posting.
