How long does the Reddit rate limit last?
Reddit doesn't publish how long. Waiting works, and so does karma: Reddit says even a little, earned by commenting in the community, can get you past the filter.
Moderation and safety
Rate limiting is Reddit capping how often an account can post or comment, shown as the message you're doing that too much.
Updated October 26, 2026
Reddit says the limit is there to stop spammers, that it falls hardest on new accounts and sensitive communities, and that Premium does not change it.
| Who it hits | What you see | What helps | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Posting and commenting limit | New or low karma accounts, and newcomers to strict communities | A you're doing that too much message | Waiting, and earning a little karma in that community |
| Spam filter | Accounts that look like spam | Usually nothing, your content just doesn't show to others | Slowing down, posting less of your own links, an appeal if it was a mistake |
| Data API limit | Apps and tools using Reddit's API | Error responses and X-Ratelimit headers | Staying under 100 requests a minute per app, as Reddit's API page sets for free access |
Only the first one is what people mean by "rate limited" on Reddit. It is a speed bump, not a penalty.
The limit is Reddit asking a new account to slow down, and the right reaction is to slow down. Replying to ten threads in an hour from a fresh account is exactly the behavior it was built to catch, and pushing through it with a second account looks worse. Comment a few times a day in one or two rooms you know, let a little karma build, and the message goes away on its own. If it never shows up but your comments still don't appear for others, check for a spam flag instead. My shadowban checks cover that.
A spam filter is an automated system or subreddit configuration that catches content likely to be unwanted, repetitive, promotional, or risky.
Karma is a rough score of the upvotes and downvotes your Reddit posts and comments received, shown on your profile.
Account age is how long a Reddit account has existed. Many moderators and automated filters use age as a rough trust signal.

No. Reddit's help page says Premium doesn't affect this spam filter and isn't a shortcut around earning karma.
No. A rate limit tells you to wait, and your comments still show once posted. If your comments are posted but nobody else can see them, that points to a spam flag on the account instead.
