How do I know if my Reddit account is suspended?
Reddit tells you. You'll see a message at the top of the site or app about your banned status, and a notification in your inbox with the reason and, for a temporary ban, how long it lasts.
Moderation and safety
A suspended account is one Reddit banned from the whole site, for a while or for good. Reddit's help pages now call it a ban.
Updated October 26, 2026
Reddit sends the reason and the length to your inbox. A temporary ban leaves your profile looking normal to others, a permanent one puts a notice on it.
| Who does it | Does Reddit tell you? | Where it stops you | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Suspended (sitewide ban) | Yes, a banner and an inbox message with the reason | Everywhere on Reddit | |
| Banned from a subreddit | That room's moderators | Yes, usually a message from the mods | Only that room |
| Shadowbanned (flagged for spam) | Reddit's spam systems | Usually not | Your posts and comments don't show to others |
Reddit's help pages have moved from the word suspension to ban, so "temporarily banned" and "permanently banned" are what you'll read there today. People still search for suspended, and they mean the same thing.
While banned, Reddit says you can't vote, post, comment, send chats, report content, create communities or edit your posts. If you were a moderator, you lose mod tools too, and a permanent ban can remove you as a mod.
The Reddit rules marketers break on the way to a sitewide ban are spam, vote manipulation and ban evasion, a second account used to get around an earlier action. For a brand, the risk is that it lands on the one account with all your history. Keep promotion a small share of what the account posts, never vote with accounts you control, and read the reason in the notice before you appeal. An appeal that explains what changed beats one that argues.
Shadowban is the common user term for situations where an account or content appears limited, hidden, or filtered without normal visible participation.
A ban prevents a redditor from participating in a subreddit or, in more serious cases, from using Reddit at the platform level.
Ban evasion is using another account, identity, or method to keep participating after a subreddit or Reddit has banned you.
Reddit tells you. You'll see a message at the top of the site or app about your banned status, and a notification in your inbox with the reason and, for a temporary ban, how long it lasts.
Follow the appeal link in the notification Reddit sent you. If you think a spam flag was a mistake, log in to the affected account and use Reddit's appeals page.
Don't. A new account made to get around a ban is ban evasion under Reddit's rules, and it can get both accounts banned for good.
No. A subreddit ban comes from that room's mods and only stops you there. A sitewide ban comes from Reddit and stops you everywhere.
