Rule summary

  • Be Civil: All conversation on this sub is expected to be civil. Rudeness, personal attacks, condescension, gatekeeping, shaming, trolling, and provoking are examples of behaviors that are unacceptable. Please do not amplify incivility by responding in kind, report the post, downvote, and let the mods handle it. Please note that being told to "GFY (Go F*** Yourself)" when you've retired is not being a jerk, it is a tongue-in-cheek in joke that actually means "GFY (Good For You)."
  • No advertising, self-promotion, solicitation, or spam.: This is not a place to exploit users for gain. Any content seeking to exploit users for your, or anyone associated with you, gain is not acceptable and will be removed. This includes, but is not limited to: linking to your own content (blog, podcast, YouTube, social media, app, calc, etc.), recommending anything you are involved with, use of referral codes/affiliate links, or mention of any other product or article, whether monetized or not, that you have interest in seeing succeed.
  • USA-Centric, But Everybody's Allowed: Some FIRE concepts apply worldwide: spend less than you earn, invest the excess, plan for the future, etc. However, many things are based on your country's laws and tax incentives. By default posts and comments here are assumed to be USA-centric (e.g. 401(k) accounts, IRAs, etc.). You're welcome to post things that don't apply to the USA, but you must include extra background info and context about your country and how it works when doing so.
  • Don't Be Off-Topic: Posts should be at least tangentially related to FIRE (and not the flaming combustion kind, either). Basic finance questions unrelated to FIRE are better suited to broader financial subreddits like /r/personalfinance or /r/povertyfinance.
  • No Shitposting: This is not the place for memes, meta-jokes, or other humorous/fictional content. Take it to /r/fijerk.
  • Don't Post If Under 18 Or In High School: If you're under 18 or you're still in high school, the standard advice is: 1. Educate yourself with a broad base of skills and knowledge that'll help you do well in life. 2. Educate yourself with a deep understanding of a specific marketable set of skills that'll help you do well in your career choice. 3. Focus more on increasing lifetime income than short-term income. That's it. Stop asking. You can keep reading and voting here, but don't post or comment. Or, you can check out /r/YoungFIRE.
  • No politics or circle-jerking: No politics or circle-jerking. There are plenty of places to engage in passionate discussions about these topics, but we strive to keep this sub as welcoming and constructive of a place as we can for people from all walks of life. These topics are restricted due to Reddit as a whole not being able to discuss them in a civil way. Discussion of policy and generic neutral mentions of political affiliation are allowed, but outright partisanship and all forms of political incivility are prohibited.
  • Limits on AI/bot content and unsupported complaints about AI/bots: AI/bot content is prohibited outside of mild AI use as a composition/translation aid. Content reported 50% AI generated or more on a Pangram scan will be removed. Complaints about AI/bot activity without evidence are prohibited and will be removed. Users may report AI violations in one way only - with a comment or modmail containing a working Pangram detection link showing 50% or above AI gen detection. Repeat or virulent posters of AI/bot content or unsupported AI/bot complaints will be banned.

Works well

  • A first person writeup of a specific spending or earning decision you made and the real outcome, with no links anywhere
  • A detailed question about a FIRE stage you are genuinely in, such as a savings rate or withdrawal plan question grounded in your own numbers
  • A country specific FIRE question that clearly explains your local laws and tax situation, as required by “USA-Centric, But Everybody's Allowed”
  • A thoughtful comment on someone else's milestone or plan that adds your own experience without recommending anything you are involved with
  • A long form lessons learned post about your own path toward financial independence, written by hand so it passes the AI scan

Avoid

  • Posting a link to your own blog, podcast, YouTube channel, app, or calculator, because “No advertising, self-promotion, solicitation, or spam.” removes anything you benefit from
  • Recommending a product or article you have any interest in seeing succeed, even if it is free and not monetized
  • Dropping referral codes or affiliate links in a post or a comment
  • Using AI to write your post, since content flagged 50 percent or more AI generated gets removed
  • Posting memes or jokes, which belong in /r/fijerk under “No Shitposting”
  • Asking basic finance questions that have nothing to do with financial independence, which “Don't Be Off-Topic” sends to broader subreddits like /r/personalfinance or /r/povertyfinance

What r/Fire Is For

This community is for people following the FIRE strategy, which stands for financial independence and retiring early. The idea in their own description is simple: earn more, spend less, and use the difference wisely. You build a baseline of financial security first, then invest the rest so you can earn freedom over your own time. The people here are savers, investors, and planners at different stages. Some are still building their savings, some are already retired and sharing how they did it. The community assumes posts are about the USA by default, because things like 401(k) accounts and IRAs depend on American laws and tax rules, but people from other countries can post if they explain how things work where they live. The tone is serious and practical. This is not a meme sub, and it is not a place for general money questions that have nothing to do with reaching financial independence.

Rules That Matter Before Posting

The rule that decides everything for a founder is “No advertising, self-promotion, solicitation, or spam.”. It is unusually wide. It covers linking to your own blog, podcast, YouTube, social media, app, or calculator. It also covers recommending anything you are involved with, referral codes, affiliate links, and even mentioning a product or article you have an interest in seeing succeed, whether it makes money or not. So a soft mention of your own tool counts the same as a hard sell. The next rule is “Limits on AI/bot content and unsupported complaints about AI/bots.”. AI content is banned except for mild use as a composition or translation aid, and content reported as 50 percent or more AI generated on a Pangram scan gets removed. Write your post yourself. Then there is “Don't Be Off-Topic.”. Posts must be at least tangentially related to FIRE, and basic finance questions belong in broader subreddits like /r/personalfinance or /r/povertyfinance. “Be Civil” matters too, because rudeness, condescension, gatekeeping, and shaming are unacceptable. “USA-Centric, But Everybody's Allowed” means posts are assumed to be about the USA by default, so if your question depends on another country you must add extra background about how your country works. “No Shitposting” bans memes and jokes, and “No politics or circle-jerking” bans partisanship. Finally, “Don't Post If Under 18 Or In High School” means young founders should read and vote but not post or comment here.

What To Post

Here is the honest part: as a founder, almost nothing promotional survives here, so think of this as a place to participate, not a place to plant links. A good post is your own real experience with the FIRE strategy, written in your own words. Share a specific decision you made about earning more or spending less, and what happened next. Ask a genuine question about a FIRE stage you are in, like planning around a specific savings rate or a withdrawal question, as long as it is about financial independence and not just general money advice. If your situation is outside the USA, add the context about your country's rules up front. Keep it human, keep it specific, and keep every link out of it, including in your profile strategy while you are active here. If you want to talk about a tool or a resource, talk about ones you have no stake in, or better yet, describe the method and let people ask.

What To Avoid

The fastest way to get removed is anything that looks like promotion. Do not link your blog, podcast, YouTube channel, social media, app, or calculator. Do not recommend anything you are involved with, and do not mention a product or article you benefit from, even if it is free. No referral codes and no affiliate links. Do not post AI written content, because anything scanned at 50 percent or more AI generated is removed. Do not post memes, jokes, or fictional content, because that belongs in /r/fijerk. Do not post basic finance questions with no FIRE connection, because those belong in /r/personalfinance or /r/povertyfinance. Do not get into politics or partisan arguments. Do not be rude, condescending, or shame anyone, and if someone is uncivil to you, report it and let the mods handle it instead of firing back. If you are under 18 or still in high school, do not post or comment at all. And if you post about a non USA situation, include the background about your country or it will not land.

Common questions about r/Fire

Can I mention my product if I do not link to it?

No. “No advertising, self-promotion, solicitation, or spam.” removes any content that seeks gain for you or anyone associated with you, and that includes links to your own blog, podcast, YouTube, social media, app, or calculator.

What if my tool is free with no monetization?

No. The rule covers recommending anything you are involved with and any product or article you have an interest in seeing succeed, whether monetized or not.

I am not in the USA. Can I still post?

Yes, “USA-Centric, But Everybody's Allowed” lets you post non USA content, but you must include extra background info and context about your country and how it works.

Can I use AI to help draft my post?

Only as a mild composition or translation aid. Content reported 50 percent or more AI generated on a Pangram scan will be removed, so write it yourself.

I am a student under 18. Can I ask questions here?

No. “Don't Post If Under 18 Or In High School” says you can read and vote but must not post or comment, and the alternative is /r/YoungFIRE.
