Rule summary

  • No low effort posts: Posts must either share investment ideas and insights or ask thoughtful questions. We are also not a financial news monitoring subreddit so a regurgitation of a news article without context are removed. Any post that contains large amounts of Gen AI text is considered low-effort. Please search first so as to not make a duplicate post on a topic. Additional guidelines can be found in the wiki here - https://www.reddit.com/r/investing/wiki/index/rules
  • Do not make posts looking for personal finance advice.: If your question likely has a "right answer", a beginner topic, you simply need help finding general investing information, personal finance advice, or if it's asking for general input on what to do with your investments then post in the "Daily Advice and Discussion Thread" here: https://www.reddit.com/r/investing/about/sticky?num=1 Additional guidelines can be found in the wiki here - https://www.reddit.com/r/investing/wiki/index/rules
  • Keep discussions civil, informative and polite.: **Off topic comments, attacks or insults will not be tolerated.** We recognize that this forum will generate differences of opinion, or misunderstandings of facts, and therefore arguments are expected. However, personal attacks, insults, trolling, or accounts dedicated to getting under the skin of others is not allowed, and will be banned. Additional guidelines can be found in the wiki here - https://www.reddit.com/r/investing/wiki/index/rules
  • Strictly no (self-)promotion or solicitation: **Violating this rule results in an automatic permanent ban. Do not post your youtube, twitter, discord, app, tool, blog, referral code, event, survey, etc.** We generally expect that people who come here are not using the forum to build a brand, generate clicks, or shill. Posts that are strictly self-interested or intended to "build awareness" are not acceptable. Additional guidelines can be found in the wiki here - https://www.reddit.com/r/investing/wiki/index/rules
  • General corporate news and political posts guidelines: Please note this is a zero tolerance rule and first offenses result in bans. Additional guidelines can be found in the wiki here - https://www.reddit.com/r/investing/wiki/index/rules
  • Effort: Posts must meet standards of effort: Do not post just an article, highlight the parts of the article you find relevant or offer some commentary surrounding the article. Additionally do not just make a self post to offer some simple thoughts. "now is the time to buy", "here's my thoughts", etc. belong as comments to existing posts. Making your own post devoid of in depth examination will likely result in it being removed. Additional guidelines can be found in the wiki here - https://www.reddit.com/r/investing/wiki/index/rules
  • Original Sourcing: articles posted must be from the orignal source on a best efforts basis: This means if CNBC is reporting on something WSJ reported on we expect you to post the original article. If anyone is writing an article based on a Bank/investment group news release/white paper post the actual paper and not journalism surrounding it. Provide the link to the source article or paper. This rule will be more strictly enforced based on how clickbaity an article is. Additional guidelines can be found in the wiki here - https://www.reddit.com/r/investing/wiki/index/rules
  • Good faith discussions and comments only: Responding to questions in bad faith, brigading, spreading misleading and false information, stock promotions from dedicated accounts are not permitted. Bans will be issued without warning. Additional guidelines can be found in the wiki here - https://www.reddit.com/r/investing/wiki/index/rules The brigading policy can be found here - https://www.reddit.com/r/investing/wiki/index/rules#wiki_brigading_policy

Works well

  • A thoughtful discussion question about an investing topic you genuinely want perspectives on, written in your own words.
  • An investment idea or insight backed by in depth examination rather than a one line take.
  • An article from the original source, with your own commentary highlighting the parts you find relevant.
  • A comment on an existing post that adds a genuine perspective or a useful fact.
  • A beginner or personal finance question placed in the Daily Advice and Discussion Thread instead of the main feed.

Avoid

  • Posting your tool, app, blog, newsletter, or launch, which trips “Strictly no (self-)promotion or solicitation” and earns an automatic permanent ban.
  • Dropping a link with no commentary, which fails “Effort: Posts must meet standards of effort” and “Original Sourcing: articles posted must be from the orignal source on a best efforts basis”.
  • Asking what to do with your own money or any beginner question as a post, which belongs in the daily advice thread under “Do not make posts looking for personal finance advice.”.
  • Pasting AI generated text into a post, which the rules treat as low effort under “No low effort posts”.
  • Linking a secondary news report instead of the original article or paper.
  • Posting general corporate news or political content without following the guidelines, which is a zero tolerance rule and bans on first offense.

What r/investing Is For

This is a community for people who want to talk about investing at a real level. The description says posts should share investment ideas and insights or ask thoughtful investing discussion questions, and that the topic should draw responses relating to investing. It is not a politics forum, not a general corporate news feed, and not a place for personal finance help, because beginner questions and anything with a right answer belong in the Daily Advice and Discussion Thread. The people posting here care about markets, sources, and depth of analysis, and the rules make clear they do not want anyone using the forum to build a brand or generate clicks.

Rules That Matter Before Posting

The rule that decides everything for a founder is “Strictly no (self-)promotion or solicitation”, which bans posting your youtube, twitter, discord, app, tool, blog, referral code, event, or survey, and says violating it results in an automatic permanent ban. “No low effort posts” requires that a post shares investment ideas and insights or asks a thoughtful investing question, and it treats any post with large amounts of Gen AI text as low effort. “Effort: Posts must meet standards of effort” says you cannot just drop an article or a simple thought post, you need to highlight the relevant parts or add commentary, and there is a 250 character requirement for posts. “Original Sourcing: articles posted must be from the orignal source on a best efforts basis” means you link the actual paper or original article, not journalism about it. “Do not make posts looking for personal finance advice.” pushes anything with a right answer or a beginner topic into the Daily Advice and Discussion Thread. “General corporate news and political posts guidelines” is zero tolerance and first offenses result in bans. “Good faith discussions and comments only” bans bad faith replies, brigading, and misleading information, with bans issued without warning.

What To Post

A good post here is a thoughtful investing discussion question or an investment idea backed by real examination, written in your own words. If you share an article, add your own commentary and highlight the parts you find relevant, and link the original source rather than a secondary report. If you are a founder, the honest play is to participate as a person, not as a brand. Ask genuine questions about markets or strategy, comment in good faith on other people's threads, and keep any product mention out of this community entirely, because the promotion rule is a permanent ban. Simple or beginner level questions go in the Daily Advice and Discussion Thread, not as standalone posts.

What To Avoid

The biggest one is promotion of any kind, because “Strictly no (self-)promotion or solicitation” carries an automatic permanent ban, and the rules call out posts that are strictly self-interested or intended to build awareness. Do not post low effort content, which includes bare article links, simple thought posts like now is the time to buy, and anything with large amounts of Gen AI text. Do not ask for personal finance or beginner advice as a post, put that in the daily thread. Do not repost news without your own commentary, and always link the original source rather than a secondary write up. Do not spread misleading or false information or engage in bad faith arguments, because “Good faith discussions and comments only” issues bans without warning. Keep comments civil and on topic, since attacks, insults, and trolling get people banned.

Common questions about r/investing

Can I mention my product or drop a link to my site?

No. Rule four, “Strictly no (self-)promotion or solicitation”, bans posting your tool, app, blog, or any link built to generate clicks, and breaking it means an automatic permanent ban.

Can I comment at all if I run a company?

Yes, but only as a genuine participant. Ask thoughtful questions, comment in good faith, and never steer threads toward your brand, because the rules say people are not here to build awareness.

What if my question is simple or beginner level?

No. “Do not make posts looking for personal finance advice.” sends anything with a right answer or beginner question to the Daily Advice and Discussion Thread.

Can I post a news article?

Only if you add your own commentary or highlight what matters, meet the effort standard, and link the original source rather than a secondary report.

Can I use AI to draft my post?

The rules say any post containing large amounts of Gen AI text is considered low effort, so write in your own words.
