Rule summary

  • No Posting Work: Samples of writing, whether for critique, self-promotion, or general sharing, may only be posted in the monthly "Would You Read This" or "Promote Yo Self" threads. **This rule is strictly enforced.**
  • Posts should be thoughtful and useful to a broad community of writers: We ask that users frame their posts so they are useful to multiple people. The Daily Discussion thread is open to all manner of topics, including those in the below prohibited topics list! Posts that contain any of our [prohibited or stale topics](https://www.reddit.com/r/writing/wiki/rules/prohibited-and-stale-topics/) will be removed.
  • No Generative AI: /r/writing is a place for human-created writing. We do not allow posts or comments that appear to have been generated, edited, or proofread by a generative AI tool. Posts and comments that mention AI (either negatively or positively) will be removed. Deliberately avoiding filters to mention the subject will result in a ban.
  • Submission Calls Requirements/AMAs: Please message modmail for all submission calls and AMAs. Any posted without moderator approval will be removed. Calls for submissions must include: 1) payment information 2) submission deadlines 3) rights requested 4) any other relevant information. Directing to a website to answer these questions is not allowed. Once approved, submission calls can be posted in the promo thread **only**.
  • Civility and Community: Treat other people with decency and respect. We encourage healthy debate and discussion, but we will remove antagonistic, caustic, or otherwise belligerent posts. We moderate on tone rather than language. Hate speech will be removed. Please report any instances of offensive talk, and the mods will deal with them; do not police the subreddit yourself. Internet vigilantism and doxxing will not be tolerated. This also includes call-out threads, genre/literary-bashing, and "response" threads.
  • Minimum Post Requirements: **All users must first acquire 5 karma WITHIN /r/writing before being allowed to post.** All posts must be properly flaired. "Other" posts will be held for mod review. Please put forth effort in your posts; /r/writing is not a search engine and the community is not your research team. This means doing your best to look into your problem before posting, ensuring your post is readable, and respecting the time of community members.

Works well

  • A post sharing a hard won lesson about drafting or editing, framed so any writer can apply it
  • A thoughtful breakdown of a common writing problem, like pacing or dialogue, with no links and no product mention
  • A genuine question in the Daily Discussion thread about a craft topic you are wrestling with
  • A comment first approach, where you answer other writers questions for a while to earn your 5 karma before posting anything
  • A self promotion share placed inside the monthly Promote Yo Self thread, following whatever that thread asks for
  • A modmail approved AMA, if you have something writers genuinely want to hear about

Avoid

  • Posting a writing sample on the main feed, even framed as a question, because the no posting work rule is strictly enforced
  • Sharing a link to your writing tool, blog, or newsletter in a standalone post instead of the monthly promo thread
  • Mentioning generative AI at all, including saying your product is an alternative to AI writing tools, since even negative mentions get removed
  • Posting before you have earned 5 karma inside this subreddit, because your post will not be allowed through
  • Skipping the required flair or picking the other flair, which lands your post in mod review
  • Asking a question you could have answered with a search, because the community is not your research team and low effort posts get removed

What r/writing Is For

This community is for discussions about the writing craft. The people here are writers talking about how to write better, how to work through drafts, and how to handle the writing life. The rules make it clear this is a craft community, not a place to showcase your work or push your stuff. Sharing samples of writing is pushed into monthly threads called Would You Read This and Promote Yo Self, and everyday questions belong in the Daily Discussion thread. If you post here, you are talking to people who care about the skill of writing itself.

Rules That Matter Before Posting

Five rules decide whether a marketing adjacent post survives here. “No Posting Work” bans writing samples on the main feed and is strictly enforced, so you cannot share your own writing or a customer sample to draw attention. “Posts should be thoughtful and useful to a broad community of writers” means your post must help many writers, not just you, and it cannot touch the prohibited or stale topics list. “No Generative AI” removes any post or comment that appears AI generated or that mentions AI at all, even negatively, and dodging the filters to sneak AI in can get you banned. “Submission Calls Requirements/AMAs” requires modmail approval before any submission call or AMA, and approved calls go in the promo thread only. “Minimum Post Requirements” blocks your first posts until you have 5 karma earned inside r/writing, and every post needs the right flair. “Civility and Community” rounds it out by removing antagonistic posts, genre bashing, and call out threads.

What To Post

A good post here teaches something about the craft of writing to a broad audience. Think a lesson you learned from editing your own drafts, a workflow that helped you finish a project, or an honest breakdown of a writing problem many people share. Frame everything so multiple writers benefit, not just you. Put in real effort, make the post readable, and search the community first so you are not asking something already answered. Add the correct flair before you post. If you want to promote anything, save it for the monthly Promote Yo Self thread. If you want to run an AMA or share a submission call, message modmail first and wait for approval. Before any of that, earn at least 5 karma by commenting here so your account can post at all.

What To Avoid

The fastest removals come from posting writing samples or self promotion on the main feed, because that rule is strictly enforced. Mentioning generative AI in any way, even to say you dislike it, gets the post removed, and deliberately working around the filters to bring up AI can get you banned. Posting before you have 5 karma earned in this subreddit will stop you at the door. Skipping the required flair gets held up, and picking the Other flair sends you to mod review. Low effort questions get removed because the community is not your research team. Submission calls and AMAs without moderator approval are removed. Antagonistic posts, genre bashing, and call out threads are removed under the civility rule.

Common questions about r/writing

Can I post about my writing tool or service on the main feed?

No. Self promotion is only allowed in the monthly Promote Yo Self thread, and the no posting work rule is strictly enforced.

Can I mention AI writing tools if I am criticizing them?

No. Rule 3 bans any mention of AI, positive or negative, and deliberately working around the filters to bring it up can get you banned.

Can I share a lesson I learned about writing craft or the writing process?

Yes, as long as it is framed to help multiple writers, contains no writing samples, no promotion, and no AI mentions, and carries the proper flair.

I want to run an AMA or post a submission call. What do I do?

Message modmail first. Unapproved calls and AMAs are removed, and approved ones go in the promo thread only.

How much karma do I need before posting?

The rules say you need 5 karma earned within r/writing, so the practical path is commenting here until you cross that line.
