Is the Reddit API free?
There is a free access level with a rate limit, for developers Reddit approves. Commercial use, like a paid app or a product feature, needs Reddit's permission first, and Reddit decides eligibility during its app review.
Core
The Reddit API, or Data API, is how approved apps read and post Reddit content by code, under Reddit's developer terms and rate limits.
Updated October 26, 2026
Free access is capped at 100 queries a minute per OAuth client, averaged over ten minutes, and traffic without OAuth is blocked outright.
| What it is for | Who uses it | |
|---|---|---|
| Data API | Reading and posting Reddit content by code | Approved developers, for example mod tool makers |
| Developer Platform (Devvit) | Apps that run inside Reddit, like games and mod tools | Developers building on Reddit itself |
| Ads API | Creating and reporting on ad campaigns | Advertisers and their partners |
| Embeds | Showing Reddit content on another site or app | Sites and apps that quote Reddit |
Reddit's API page is blunt about the rules of the road: authenticate with OAuth, send a unique User-Agent, and delete anything users have deleted from Reddit.
You probably won't touch the API yourself. It still matters, because every Reddit tool you buy reads Reddit somehow, and Reddit decides who may use its data and for what. Before you trust a tool's numbers, ask where they come from and whether that use is allowed. A tool that can't answer is a risk to your data and maybe your account.
For your own posting, the API changes nothing. A post sent by an app is held to the same subreddit rules, the same rate limits and the same spam rules as one typed by hand.
Rate limiting is Reddit capping how often an account can post or comment, shown as the message you're doing that too much.
Automoderator is a configurable Reddit moderation tool that can filter, remove, reply to, or flag posts and comments based on rules set by moderators.
Reddit search helps users find posts, comments, communities, and topics across Reddit, including filtering within communities and by flair.

No. The Ads API is for advertisers managing campaigns and reports. The Data API is for reading and posting Reddit content. They have separate terms.
