Rule summary

  • Posts must be in English: To allow as much interaction between subreddit visitors as possible, all posts should be in a language that as many people as possible understand. Since Reddit is a primarily English website, that's the language of choice.
  • Posts must be related to manufacturing: As it says on the tin: if your post is not related to manufacturing, it's not appropriate for this subreddit.
  • Keep things business casual: We're striving for a business casual, welcoming atmosphere.
  • Selling products or services is not allowed, nor is other self promotion: This community should be a place to relax, share experiences and speak to colleagues in an informal setting. Sales offers distract from our focus and do not fit with these goals. This includes free trials, surveys, and similar promotional offerings. Interactions should be on personal title, not as representative of your business or employer. **Replying to requests is this rule's only exception.** Replies should primarily be informative and you must have a non-commercial track record.
  • This is a subreddit for individuals, not companies, organizations or their representatives: This is a subreddit for natural persons in the manufacturing sector, not business representatives. If you are writing on behalf of your business or organization, use a corporate account, or other ways of posting on behalf of a legal entity rather than you yourself as private individual, you are not welcome on this subreddit. Exceptions can be made, for example for journalists, after contacting the moderator team. Asking for help with your job is fine, if it's on personal title.
  • Company blogs are only allowed on Saturdays: **This rule only allows company blogs you are unaffiliated with. Rule 4 still applies.** Blogs are often used to post disguised advertisements for the related companies. Links inside the text or elsewhere on the same page lead viewers to the company's offered services. Therefore they're a way of avoiding rule 4. However, every now and then there are blogs with useful information. To allow these, **company blogs can only be posted on Saturdays based on UTC time.**
  • Surveys, questionnaires and (product/market/academic) research are not allowed: This is not the place for your market research, your research respondents, or surveys of any kind. If you break this rule for some AI tool, we'll permaban you.
  • Video submissions are heavily restricted: Video submissions are only allowed if they meet very strict conditions. See [this post](https://www.reddit.com/r/manufacturing/comments/o1f8jn/new_rule_restrictions_to_video_submissions/?) for the requirements.
  • Follow reddiquette: In /r/manufacturing, please follow [reddiquette](https://www.reddithelp.com/hc/en-us/articles/205926439).
  • No low effort posts: Put effort in your post, so that commenters have something to go on. Include sufficient details. Specifically for "How to manufacture ..."-posts, examples to include are dimensions, desired quantity, a budget / cost per unit, and a sketch or drawing, if you're willing to produce overseas or locally, and more.
  • Posts written by ChatGPT, Google Bard, or other AI services are not permitted: Most posts and comments written by AI services tend to be low-effort and sales-oriented. Using them to improve your grammar and spelling is fine, especially for non-native English speakers. But, please only include your own content.
  • Discuss in the open: To make discussion as valuable as possible, it's important to have it out in the open. If you move the conversation to DMs, other people can't learn from it anymore. Therefore, we do not allow suggestions to move discussion to DMs.

Works well

  • A detailed question seeking advice on a specific manufacturing process, including sketches and required dimensions, which shows effort under the rule 'No low effort posts'.
  • A personal reflection on a complex operational challenge within the manufacturing sector, written in a professional yet informal style to fit the 'Keep things business casual' guideline.
  • An informative article about a technical aspect of the industry, provided it is not a disguised advertisement and is not promotional in nature.
  • A helpful response to a colleague's request for information, which is permitted under Rule 4 only if the reply is informative and you have a non-commercial track record.

Avoid

  • Posting a sales pitch for a product or service is strictly forbidden under the rule 'Selling products or services is not allowed, nor is other self promotion'.
  • Submitting any market research, surveys, or questionnaires violates the rule 'Surveys, questionnaires and (product/market/academic) research are not allowed'.
  • Using AI services like ChatGPT or Google Bard to generate the content of your posts is prohibited by the rule 'Posts written by ChatGPT, Google Bard, or other AI services are not permitted'.
  • Posting content as a company or organization representative instead of as a private individual, unless you qualify for an exception under the rule 'This is a subreddit for individuals, not companies, organizations or their representatives'.
  • Submitting low effort posts that do not include sufficient detail, such as dimensions, quantity, or budget, which violates the rule 'No low effort posts'.

What r/manufacturing Is For

This subreddit is a space for anyone who works in the manufacturing industry. It is designed to be a place where people can share diverse content, including articles, videos, and personal posts. The community aims to maintain a welcoming and business casual atmosphere for colleagues to interact.

Rules That Matter Before Posting

The most critical rules for marketing are Rule 4, which bans selling and self-promotion; Rule 5, which restricts posts to individuals not companies; Rule 6, which severely limits company blog posting to Saturdays; Rule 7, which prohibits market research; and Rule 11, which bans AI generated content.

What To Post

A good post here focuses on sharing knowledge or asking for genuine help as an individual. If you are discussing how to manufacture something, you need to provide significant detail, such as dimensions, desired quantity, budget per unit, and even a sketch or drawing. Keep your tone business casual and ensure your content is entirely your own writing.

What To Avoid

You must avoid posting anything that is not related to manufacturing, as per Rule 2. You should also avoid writing posts or comments using AI services like ChatGPT, which is banned under Rule 11. Furthermore, you must avoid moving discussions to private messages, because the rule 'Discuss in the open' requires all conversations to remain public for the benefit of the community.
