Rule summary

  • Keep it real: actual small business owners only, no MLM: Current or former SBOs only.
  • Keep it relevant: only bring topics about Small Business: Relevant to Small Business
  • Keep it safe: no soliciting or self-promotion: B2B vendors may comment if it is relevant to the post and adds value to the discussion
  • Keep it nice: be professional and respectful: Be professional and respectful
  • Keep it clean: no NSFW or profanity: Keep it clean: no NSFW.
  • Minimum user account history: User account must have at least 5 post karma or at least 10 comment karma or be at least 7 days old.

Works well

  • A plain question about a real problem you face running your own business, like pricing, hiring, or dealing with late paying customers
  • A lesson learned from a mistake you made as an owner, written as a story with no link and no pitch
  • A genuine offer of help in the comments when another owner describes a problem your professional background actually solves
  • A discussion starter about a common small business topic, like bookkeeping habits or finding suppliers, where you share your own experience first
  • An honest breakdown of a decision you made, like buying equipment versus renting, with the numbers from your own business

Avoid

  • Posting about your product, service, or company, because self promotion gets removed under rule three
  • Soliciting clients or leads in a post or a comment
  • Posting before you have 5 post karma, 10 comment karma, or a 7 day old account
  • Posting when you are not a current or former small business owner
  • Bringing up topics that have nothing to do with running a small business
  • Multi level marketing pitches of any kind, which the rules call out by name

What r/SmallBusinessOwners Is For

r/SmallBusinessOwners is a place for resources, support, and discussion among people who run small businesses. The rules make it very clear who belongs here. Only current or former small business owners can post, so this is not a community for people who are thinking about starting something someday or who serve business owners from the outside. The topics stay on small business, and the tone stays professional, clean, and free of profanity. This is a support room for owners, not a marketplace. People come here to swap experience, ask questions about running their business, and help each other out.

Rules That Matter Before Posting

The rules here name themselves in a way that makes my job easy. “Keep it real: actual small business owners only, no MLM” means you need to be a current or former small business owner before you post, and it excludes multi level marketing pitches too. “Keep it relevant: only bring topics about Small Business” keeps posts anchored to small business topics and nothing else. “Keep it safe: no soliciting or self-promotion” is the big one for any founder reading this, and it comes with one exception, because B2B vendors may comment if it is relevant to the post and adds value to the discussion. “Keep it nice: be professional and respectful” and “Keep it clean: no NSFW or profanity” set the tone. Finally, “Minimum user account history” requires at least 5 post karma, or at least 10 comment karma, or an account at least 7 days old.

What To Post

A good post here comes from your own life as a business owner, not from your marketing calendar. Share a real problem you are working through, a decision you made and what happened, or a question where you genuinely want other owners to weigh in. Keep it about the topic of small business, not about your product. If you happen to work for a company that serves businesses, you can still take part, but only in the comments, only when it fits the post, and only when what you say actually helps the discussion. Write like a person talking to other people, keep the tone professional, and make sure your account meets the minimum karma or age requirement before you hit post.

What To Avoid

Do not promote your business, pitch your services, or try to collect clients here, because rule three shuts that down and posts that self promote get removed. Do not post if you are not a current or former small business owner, since the first rule means the community checks that you belong. Do not drift off topic into anything unrelated to small business. Do not get snarky, and do not use profanity or post anything not safe for work. Also do not post from a brand new account with no karma, because the account history rule will get your post removed before anyone reads it.

Common questions about r/SmallBusinessOwners

Can I promote my product or service here?

No, not in your own posts. The rules ban soliciting and self promotion. The only opening is for B2B vendors, and even that is limited to comments that are relevant to the post and add value to the discussion.

Do I have to own a business to post?

Yes. The rules say only current or former small business owners can post, and multi level marketing is explicitly excluded.

What account requirements do I need to meet?

Your account needs at least 5 post karma, or at least 10 comment karma, or it needs to be at least 7 days old.

I work at a company that sells to small businesses. Can I join in?

You can comment, but only when your comment is relevant to the post and adds value to the discussion. Starting your own self promotional post is not allowed.

Is casual language okay?

Keep it professional and keep it clean. The rules require respect, no profanity, and no not safe for work content.
