Rule summary

  • Honor the GS Promise and Law.: The Girl Scout Law and Promise is a set of values designed to guide us, and should be a priority when posting or commenting.
  • Scout Safety: Scout Safety refers to all scouts young and old and their safety here on this subreddit. Photos containing locations, names, troop numbers, or any other identifying marks which may jeopardize a scout's safety is not permitted in this subreddit.
  • No Harsh Language & Profanity (Words and Photos): If you have something to say that you would not say in front of your troop, please do not say it here. This includes profanity, vulgar comments and posts, and photos with profanity, nudity, racism, etc.
  • No Solicitation of any kind: As rules vary across the nation, and council by council, no solicitation of any kind is permitted. This includes but is not limited to: Cookie sales, Nuts and Candies, Magazines, GoFundMe, or any fundraiser. This also includes requesting links, or DMs with sales links. Purpose: To reduce confusion and arguments of who is correct. Affiliate links are also not permitted, including links to personal blogs with monetization.
  • No Trolling: Troll commenting includes discussion of Girl Scouts being sexist for not allowing boys, accusing the organization of child labor for having fundraising, and comparing cookie sales to pyramid schemes.
  • No Political Discussion: Due to the nature of this subreddit, political discussion will not be permitted. Any mention of political parties, or comments political in nature are not permitted. Opinions are welcome, but keep political reasoning out.
  • Posts & Moderators: Posts or comments can be locked or deleted by moderators at their discretion.
  • When In Doubt: When in Doubt: Contact your local service unit or council representative for answers regarding specific location based rules or guidelines. We don't have all of the answers, but someone local might!
  • Safe Place to Fail: This is a safe place to fail. Repeat offenders may be banned from the subreddit if no attempt of improvement has been made. In addition, bans may only be placed with majority of moderator approval.
  • Megathread: When a megathread is in place, new posting on the topic is disallowed and discussion should direct into the megathread.
  • No AI generated content: AI-generated posts are not permitted on this subreddit. AI-generated content is harmful to the environment, and also steals from artists and authors without permission or accreditation. It is not welcome here.

Works well

  • A plain text post asking troop leaders how they structure badge work for a specific age group, with no link and no pitch.
  • A short post sharing a lesson you learned running a volunteer event, framed as your own experience and inviting others to compare notes.
  • A question post about cookie season logistics, such as how leaders keep paperwork sane, answered by the community rather than by you selling a solution.
  • A post celebrating a troop milestone described in words only, with no photos that reveal names, troop numbers, or locations.
  • A contribution inside an existing megathread on a popular topic, instead of a new standalone post.

Avoid

  • Posting any cookie sale, nut and candy, magazine, GoFundMe, or fundraiser link, because “No Solicitation of any kind” bans all of it including requests for DMs with sales links.
  • Sharing photos that reveal a scout's name, troop number, location, or any other identifying detail, because “Scout Safety” does not allow it.
  • Dropping an affiliate link or a link to your monetized personal blog, because the solicitation rule explicitly excludes both.
  • Using profanity or harsh language, or sharing photos with it, because “No Harsh Language & Profanity (Words and Photos)” applies to words and pictures alike.
  • Posting AI generated images or AI written content, because “No AI generated content” forbids it outright.
  • Starting the arguments “No Trolling” names, like calling Girl Scouts sexist, calling fundraising child labor, or comparing cookie sales to pyramid schemes.

What r/girlscouts Is For

This is the unofficial home on Reddit for everything Girl Scouts and Girl Guides. From the rules, you can tell who posts here: troop leaders, volunteers, parents, and scouts themselves, people who plan meetings, handle cookie season logistics, and look after young members. The rules read like a community built around protecting kids first. There is a promise and law to honor, a scout safety rule about identifying details, a rule saying you should not say anything here you would not say in front of your troop, and a rule pointing people to their local service unit or council for location specific questions. This is a support and discussion space for people inside scouting, not a place for outsiders to pitch things.

Rules That Matter Before Posting

The rule that decides everything marketing related is “No Solicitation of any kind”, which bans cookie sales, nuts and candies, magazines, GoFundMe, any fundraiser, requesting links or DMs with sales links, affiliate links, and links to personal blogs with monetization. That effectively closes the door on promotion, links, and selling in this community. “Scout Safety” matters next, because photos showing locations, names, troop numbers, or other identifying marks are not permitted, so any picture you post has to be scrubbed of identifying details. “No Harsh Language & Profanity (Words and Photos)” keeps the tone clean, and “No Political Discussion” rules out framing anything through politics. “No AI generated content” is a hard ban on AI written or AI made posts. “No Trolling” calls out specific argument bait, and “Megathread” means a popular topic may be locked to a single thread. Finally, “Posts & Moderators” lets moderators lock or delete at their discretion, and “Safe Place to Fail” means repeat offenders can be banned if they show no improvement.

What To Post

Honestly, this is one of the hardest communities for a founder to post in, because solicitation of any kind is banned. That includes affiliate links and links to personal blogs with monetization, so the usual soft pitch routes are closed. What survives here is a plain text post that helps someone do scouting better, with no link and no ask. Think a question about troop meeting logistics, a lesson learned running a volunteer event, or an observation about cookie season planning that invites other leaders to share what works. Write it yourself, because AI generated posts are not permitted. If you are a volunteer or parent yourself, share that experience plainly and keep it conversational. Check for an active megathread before posting on a popular topic. Your name in the community should come from being consistently helpful, not from a pitch.

What To Avoid

Do not post any solicitation, which means no cookie sales, no nuts and candies, no magazines, no GoFundMe, no fundraiser of any kind, no requesting links, and no DMs with sales links. Do not post affiliate links or links to personal blogs with monetization. Never post photos containing locations, names, troop numbers, or other identifying marks that could jeopardize a scout's safety. Keep harsh language, profanity, and vulgar photos out entirely. Skip AI generated posts, since they are not permitted here. Stay away from political parties and political comments, and avoid the trolling patterns the rules call out, like arguing Girl Scouts is sexist for not allowing boys, calling fundraising child labor, or comparing cookie sales to pyramid schemes. When a megathread is in place, do not make a new post on that topic. Remember moderators can lock or delete posts at their discretion.

Common questions about r/girlscouts

Can I promote my fundraising tool or app here?

No. “No Solicitation of any kind” bans every fundraiser, including GoFundMe and any other charity drive, because rules vary council by council and the mods want no confusion about what is allowed.

Can I share a photo of a troop activity to show off my product's results?

No. “Scout Safety” forbids photos showing locations, names, troop numbers, or any identifying marks, so post text descriptions or tightly cropped images instead.

Can I link to my blog post if it has affiliate links?

No. Affiliate links and links to personal blogs with monetization are explicitly not permitted under the solicitation rule.

Can I use AI to write my post or make a graphic?

No. “No AI generated content” is a hard ban, so anything you publish here should be written and created by a person.

Can I comment on policy or politics related to youth organizations?

No. “No Political Discussion” keeps all political parties and political reasoning out, even when opinions themselves are welcome.
