Rule 1: No Memes: Meme / image macro posts are not allowed, except in comments. This rule is suspended during all OPM and government closures. Any post that violates this rule will be removed and the OP will be labeled as a dirty memer.

Rule 2: No Advertisement or Solicitation: No advertisement or solicitation. No ticket sales. Exceptions if you're offering a free ticket, or looking for a hard to find product/service (excl. tickets). Events (incl. protests & demonstrations) should be kept to the Weekend Guide that runs from Wed-Sun as a sticky post.. Job listings go to r/DCJobs. Housing to r/DCforRent. Don't post referral codes, surveys, petitions, crowdfunding, blog self-promotion, videos, or other media or products. AMAs must be scheduled with the mod team.

Rule 3: Relevance: Keep content relevant to the people, places, and things in the DC area. This includes the immediate suburbs in Virginia (Alexandria/Arlington/Fairfax/Loudon) and Maryland (Montgomery/Prince George's). News about those suburbs that isn't relevant to DC should go to a regional subreddit. If your content is about the federal government, but doesn't contain information about its effect on the region, it will also be removed. Timeliness is also a component. Posts of old articles will be removed.

Rule 4: Repost: Reposts are not allowed. Please keep updates to breaking news to the most active current thread made within the past 24-hours. In instances where many posts get made at once, the mods will attempt to preserve the post that is seeing the most activity and is from the best source, not necessarily the submission that came first. If it's a breaking story, please check /new/ before submitting.

Rule 5: Keep It Civil: Do not personally insult other posters or post discriminatory content. There is little patience for trolling, slap fights, or pile-ons. If your only reply is going to be driven-into-the-ground snark - e.g. biking whataboutisms, DC's gun laws, the NMAAHC, or federal representation for the city - move on. Posts will generally be locked due to brigading or graveyard commenting. All posts about crime will automatically be locked. [Explanation](https://www.reddit.com/r/washingtondc/wiki/crime).

Rule 6: No Editorialized Titles: Please do not editorialize or heavily edit titles to news articles, blog posts, or other content. Keep your takes for the comments.
- [>]
Rule 7: Common and Casual Questions: Common questions must not be easily answered by recent threads, the wiki, or a Google search. This includes posts about moving to DC, haircut/gym/tattoo/restaurant recommendations, and similar. If you have done prior research and still believe your question could benefit from discussion, your post must contain enough information to enable specific suggestions, such as your budget, desired location, etc. This rule is intended to discourage low-effort posts. Quality discussion is welcome!

Rule 8: No posts linking to X/Twitter: Posts from Twitter/X must be shared as unredacted screenshots. A link to the post should be shared in the comments, along with the text of the post (for Redditors who rely on screen reading software). This does not apply to self posts or comments. Self-posts that solely consist of a link (or with minimal commentary) will be treated as an attempt to circumvent this policy. This rule may be waived/relaxed during emergency periods.

Rule 9: Spam and Abusive Usage: Posting the same content frequently, or making use of tools that spam the subreddit with erroneous reports, will result in a ban. This includes tools that edit posts and comments to be gibberish, which flood the moderation queue with false positives.
- [>]
Rule 10: No Generative AI content: This subreddit is a place for the people who live in the region, not chatbots. Posts, comments, and media suspected of consisting of the output of Generative AI technologies (e.g., ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude) will be removed. The use of such tools for assistive purposes (such as blurring faces) is permitted.

Rule 0: Please do not try to cleverly circumvent some rule listed here. These rules exist as general guidelines by and for the community and are flexible.
