Rule summary
- Poaching / Illegal fishing activities: Poaching and illegal fishing activities include but aren't limited to: overlimit catching, dip netting, fishing where prohibited, trespassing, catching fish out of season, and anything else that is prohibited by the current year's Ontario Fishing regulations. Poaching posts must include what the result from the OP's report to MNR and the result of the conversation. The mods have spoken to the MNR about poaching being shared on this sub and they encourage reports so they can bust more poachers
- No spamming of services / products.: Unless approved by the moderators spamming of products and/or services will be removed.
- Not relevant to Fishing in Ontario: Posts and comments must be related to fishing in Ontario. Immigration policies, politics, and politicians are generally off topic for a fishing in Ontario sub. There may be exceptions though comments and posts that are off topic will be removed.
- No posting of photos of mis-handling fish: If you are going to post a photo please use proper fish handling techniques. Pictures of fish in mud, on gravel or being mishandled will be removed.
- No asking for fishing spots.: Anglers put a lot of time and effort into finding their favourite spots. Making public posts asking for spots is not something we would like to advertise as there are alot of lurkers looking to take advantage of our sometimes limited resources. You are welcome to DM a person for spots but try to refrain from asking in a public forum.
- No low quality posts: We get a lot of posts of people asking for spots to fish (not contrary to rule 5) or asking how to fish. While we think it's ok for new anglers to ask these type(s) of questions, we would like that the poster do some of their own research and put effort into the post. There is a wealth of information online regarding how to find places to fish, where to fish and how to fish. Sharing that within the post is a great way to start conversation!
- Racism / Violence: Any suggestion of taking the law into your own hands, breaking other people's property (slashing tires, breaking rods), suggesting physical confrontation will result in permanent ban. Any racism will also result in permanent ban

- Message the moderators before posting and ask if you can share your fishing product or service, since the rule "No spamming of services / products." requires approval.
- Share a detailed post about a fishing technique you tried in Ontario, including what you researched online and what you learned on the water.
- Post a photo of a catch using proper fish handling, with a short story about the trip and what you learned.

What r/FishingOntario Is For
This community is for anglers in Ontario to connect with each other. The public description says it is the best place in Ontario to do that. The rules confirm that everything posted must relate to fishing in Ontario. People share catches, discuss techniques, and report poaching. New anglers are welcome to ask questions, but they are expected to put in some effort first.
Rules That Matter Before Posting
The rule that matters most for a founder is "No spamming of services / products." It says plainly that promotion gets removed unless a moderator approves it first. "No low quality posts" also matters because it sets a bar for effort, and a lazy promotional post will fail that bar even if it is not called spam.
