Rule summary

  • No advertising: No advertising without contacting the mods first. Posting your youtube videos is OK as long as you contribute more than just linking them here. Posting things that stand to give you a personal financial gain is not ok, this would include ads, physical items, subscriptions, referrals, sponsored videos, paid apps etc. For profit organisations attempting to use our community to provide a service that you should be paying or compensating someone for (capitalising on unpaid work) is also not ok.
  • No AI use of any kind.: AI Generated or modified content is not allowed under any circumstances, this includes but is not limited to: AI Image generation, AI image modification/filters, AI text/stories/comments, posting your "research" from AI, posting websites, apps, tools, made by AI, etc. AI is a significant drag on society and only exists to deskill the average person, cut jobs, and earn billionares more money, which in the end will cause societal collapse. We will not be changing our mind on this ruling.
  • No intentionally controversial posts.: Do not intentionally post controversial topics in order to get a reaction from people.
  • Wednesdays - Virtual or hobby content is permitted.: Wednesdays are a free day, anything that isn't real life can be posted on this day. Model Railways, Video Games etc are all only allowed on Wednesday, posts containing these things that aren't posted on Wednesdays will be removed.
  • No Spammy, low quality posts or low effort posts.: This includes but is not limited to: Low quality memes, Bad quality photos, Low Effort posts, General spam etc AI is now under a separate, well defined rule. This includes low-effort repetitive "meme" posts. Don't kill what was funny by overdoing it. It is up to the mods to decide what is and isn't spam but please at least use your common sense, Post what you would expect to see here yourself.
  • No pictures of camera screens: Basically don't take a picture of your camera screen to post, Post the image directly from the camera instead.
  • Do not impersonate.: Do not create flairs to impersonate railway staff, railway staff should use the verification system to gain a flair. Noting you work for the railway in the post body is not punishable, only use of flair to do it.
  • No Pornographic Content: No Pornographic Content
  • Permanent ban on discord: Permanent bans on discord will be crossed over to any known reddit accounts.

Works well

  • A direct photo from your camera of a UK train at a station or on a line, with a title that names the train and the location.
  • A question about a UK railway route, timetable, or piece of rolling stock that you genuinely want answered.
  • A YouTube video about UK trains that you share alongside a written summary or your own observations, not just a bare link.
  • A discussion post about a real change to UK rail services, written in your own words with no AI assistance.
  • A model railway or train simulator post, but only on a Wednesday.

Avoid

  • Posting any advertisement, sponsored link, referral, paid app, or anything that gives you personal financial gain without first messaging the moderators for approval.
  • Using any AI tool to generate or edit text, images, stories, comments, or websites that you share here. The rule is absolute and the moderators say they will not change their minds.
  • Posting model railway content, video games, or any other non-real-life hobby content on a day that is not Wednesday.
  • Taking a photo of your camera screen instead of uploading the actual image file from the camera.
  • Creating a flair that makes you look like railway staff when you are not verified as such.
  • Posting low-effort memes repeatedly or submitting bad quality photos that the moderators would consider spam.

What r/uktrains Is For

This community is for photographs, questions, and discussions about trains and railways in the UK. People who post here care about real trains in the real world. If you have a photo of a train, a question about a railway, or a discussion about something happening on the UK rail network, that is what the room is for. There is also a Discord server linked in the description, and bans there carry over to Reddit.

Rules That Matter Before Posting

The rule titled "No advertising" is the one that matters most for anyone doing marketing.
