Rule summary

  • Be Civil: Name calling, hate speech, general hostility, and anything else outside of being excellent to one another is not allowed.
  • NO POSTING MUSIC - NO PROMOTION OR FEEDBACK - NO "I BUILT A TOOL...": **See the full sub rules linked below for more details.** This is a community to discuss music-making and music-makers. There are no top-level threads dedicated to individual work (including bragging about placements, streams, or accomplishments). Anyone sharing their own or others work (or in any way asking for) feedback, promotion, or collaboration must use the dedicated recurring thread. You cannot share any music, products, or services - in posts or comments. Not even if someone asks.
  • No off-topic and/or low-effort posts: **See the full sub rules linked below for more details** -No Rant, Motivation, or Mental-Health Posts -No Memes, Images, Battlestations, etc. -No Studio Build posts -No posts about marketing / business - use a music biz or marketing sub instead. -NO POSTS ABOUT AI **See the full sub rules for more details** Use the Weekly Free Talk Friday for these and other off-topic topics.
  • No Distributor or PRO support requests: **See the full sub rules linked below for more details** The WATMM community is not affiliated with Distrokid, CDBaby, BMI, ASCAP or any other distributor or PRO. Submit a support request or ticket with the company of your choice if you have problems with or questions about their services.
  • No Legal Questions: **See the full sub rules linked below for more details**
  • No Piracy: **See the full sub rules linked below for more details**
  • No Surveys or polls: No surveys or polls. Please review the full sub rules.
  • No Technical Support Requests: Use the weekly quic- questions or gear threads instead.
  • No "What do I buy/What do I use": Do not ask for a product recommendation in the remain body of the sub Most of these conversations have been asked and answered. Use the Weekly Gear Thread or you can google and use YouTube for all these answers.
  • Full sub rules linked here: [Click here to read our full sub rules](https://www.reddit.com/r/WeAreTheMusicMakers/wiki/rules)
  • FAQ: [Click here for our FAQ](https://www.reddit.com/r/WeAreTheMusicMakers/wiki/faq)
  • No Reposting after removal for violating sub rules.: If the mods or Automod have removed your post, please read the reason why. You may reformat your post to fit within the purview of the sub or find another sub that is more appropriate. Reposting will lead to a ban.
  • NO AI: If you use AI to post you will be banned. If you post links to AI generated music you will be banned. If you post anyhting AI related you will be banned. This is a sub for humans.

Works well

  • A plain text post about a concrete production or songwriting problem you worked through, focused on the process and containing no link and no mention of your product.
  • A thoughtful question about craft, like how other music makers handle a specific stage of writing or finishing a track, which invites real discussion instead of a pitch.
  • Sharing your own music, asking for feedback, or looking for collaborators inside the dedicated recurring thread, which is the one sanctioned place for all of that.
  • A gear question or tech support question placed in the Weekly Gear Thread or the weekly questions thread, as the rules direct.
  • Patient, helpful comments on other people's process questions with no links and no product mentions, which is how you earn standing in a community this protective of its topic.
  • Reading the FAQ and full sub rules before posting anything, since both are linked by the mods and most removable topics are answered there.

Avoid

  • Sharing your own song, beat, or album in a post or even in a comment when someone asks, because the no posting music rule bans this everywhere on the sub.
  • Dropping a link to your tool, sample pack, or service, since the rules say you cannot share products or services in posts or comments, not even when a user asks for recommendations.
  • Posting feedback requests, collab calls, or stream and playlist bragging, which all belong in the dedicated recurring thread only.
  • Writing anything that mentions or involves AI, including AI music links and AI built tools, because rule thirteen says you will be banned for it.
  • Posting about marketing or business topics, which rule three sends to music biz or marketing subs instead.
  • Asking what gear or software to buy, or requesting technical support outside the weekly threads, which trip rules eight and nine.

What r/WeAreTheMusicMakers Is For

This community is for music makers, and the description says it plainly: a place to discuss the active process of making music. The people posting here are the ones actually writing, recording, producing, and finishing music, and the conversation is about the craft and the process, not the output. That distinction shapes every rule in the sub. You can talk about how a mix came together or how a workflow problem got solved, but you cannot use the main feed to show the music itself, ask for feedback, or promote anything.

Rules That Matter Before Posting

For anyone thinking about marketing here, one rule decides almost everything, and it is “NO POSTING MUSIC - NO PROMOTION OR FEEDBACK - NO “I BUILT A TOOL…””. It bans top level threads about your own work, it bans asking for feedback or collaboration outside the dedicated recurring thread, and it says you cannot share any music, products, or services in posts or comments, not even when someone asks. The next one is “No off-topic and/or low-effort posts”, which sends marketing and business posts away entirely and says to use a music biz or marketing sub instead. Then there is “NO AI”, which bans AI content so strictly that posting anything AI related gets you banned. “No Surveys or polls” shuts down market research, “No Technical Support Requests” and “No “What do I buy/What do I use”” push product questions into the weekly threads, and “No Reposting after removal for violating sub rules.” warns that reposting after a removal can get you banned. Finally, “Be Civil” sets the tone for how you talk to people in the comments.

What To Post

Honestly, very little of the usual founder playbook survives here, and that is worth saying up front. The main feed is for discussions about the active process of making music, so a good post shares a lesson, an experience, or a question about the craft itself, written as plain text with no links and no product mentions. Think about a post about a workflow change that fixed a real problem in your sessions, or an honest look at something you learned while finishing a project, as long as it is about the process and not a plug. If you want to share your music, get feedback, promote, or find collaborators, the dedicated recurring thread is the one accepted place for all of that. Gear questions and technical support questions belong in the weekly threads, not the main feed. If your actual goal is marketing a product or talking business, the rules tell you to take it to a music biz or marketing sub instead.

What To Avoid

The fastest way to get removed is posting your own music or anyone else's in the main feed, or asking for feedback, promotion, or collaboration there instead of the dedicated recurring thread. Sharing a link to your music, product, or service is banned in posts and in comments, and the rules are explicit that this holds even when someone asks you for it. Posts about marketing or business are off topic here and belong in a music biz or marketing sub. Anything AI related is a straight ban, including links to AI generated music and posts written with AI. Surveys and polls are not allowed, so no market research threads. Technical support requests and product recommendation questions go in the weekly threads, not the main feed. Do not ask distributor or PRO support questions or legal questions. And if a post gets removed, never repost it, because reposting after a rule violation leads to a ban.

Can I share my music here to promote it?

No. This community bans promotion and music sharing in normal posts, so the dedicated recurring thread is the only accepted place for it.

No. Rule thirteen is absolute. Anything AI related, including posts made with AI help, leads to a ban.

Is there any way a founder can post here at all?

Yes, when the experience is told as a craft story with no link and no product pitch, and it must touch music making rather than marketing or business.

Where do support style questions go?

Gear and tech questions go in the weekly threads, and rule twelve means a removed post cannot be reposted, so read the removal reason first.
