Rule summary

  • Follow Reddiquette+: Please follow [Reddiquette](https://www.reddithelp.com/hc/en-us/articles/205926439)+. We encourage healthy debate, but we can disagree without being mean or attacking each other. If you can’t be nice then please move on. Discrimination or antagonism towards any individual, group of people, or this subreddit itself will result in content removal and may also result in a ban.
  • No Dietary Activism: We can easily meet our nutrition needs under a variety of conditions and the way you eat is not inherently better than the way anyone else eats. Vilification of someone else’s dietary choice is not allowed on this sub. This rule also applies to questions comparing the relative health of different foods. There is no way to answer these sort of questions without violating this rule.
  • No Science Rejection or Conspiracy Theories: On this sub we follow the WHO. If your comment is in conflict with WHO recommendations peer reviewed evidence is necessary. YouTube is not evidence. Regurgitating something you read on another sub is not evidence (and we know cause we hear the same argument over and over with the same cherry picked articles used as evidence). Remember, nutrition is a new science and what we know is evolving as we continue learning more. Therefore, sources provided must be recent (within the past 10 years).
  • No Medical Context, Request, or Advice: No discussion of any medical condition, procedure, treatment, or lab values is allowed on this subreddit. If you are trying to fix or heal your body your post will be removed. Random strangers on the internet have no business answering medical questions. See a doctor or a registered dietitian. Discussion of starvation diets, eating disorders, or diets for minors is not allowed and continued violations will result in a ban.
  • Personal situations posts are NOT allowed: 25 August 26: apologies for the lapse in our weekly /r/Nutrition Weekly Personal Nutrition Discussion posts. We are working on it. You may not post about you or what you eat in any way. No diet evaluations, food quantity consumption queries, or comparison of the nutritional content of specific foods. This goal of this sub is to discuss the science of nutrition, which is harder to do when the feed is clogged with posts that really only apply to you or someone in your geographic area.
  • No Spam or Self Promotion: NO self promotion of any kind is allowed on this subreddit. You may not link to, discuss, or mention your project, website, app, or business. You may not draw readers to your website or share branded materials. If it is by you, about you, or affiliated with you in any way, including in promotion of a company that employs you, it is not allowed. If Reddit identifies you as a bot your comments and posts will be deleted even if they don’t violate other sub rules.
  • Off Topic Posts: This sub is dedicated to the science of nutrition. Posts about cooking, recipes, different supermarket brands of food, exercise, electrolyte drinks, food apps, and anything that is not about the science of nutrition will be removed.
  • Account Restrictions: Brand new accounts will not be able to post in this subreddit. You can comment on others’ posts and get to know us while you gather karma. Accounts with any form of karma that is low will not be able to post. Negative karma accounts will not be able to post or comment. Bot and AI accounts are not allowed. If content looks like it was written by AI it will be removed. If our filters and/or Reddit think your account is a bot content will be removed even if it does not violate other sub rules.

Works well

  • Share a recent peer reviewed study on a macronutrient or micronutrient with a link to the source and a summary of the findings
  • Ask a question about the mechanism of a metabolic process, like how a specific vitamin is absorbed, without any personal context
  • Discuss nutrition news or research from a journal, citing the publication and year, with no mention of your own work

Avoid

  • Mentioning or linking your app, website, blog, or business anywhere in a post or comment
  • Asking what you should eat or how your diet looks
  • Comparing two foods to ask which is healthier
  • Citing a YouTube video or a study older than ten years
  • Posting from a brand new account or one with low karma
  • Writing in a way that looks AI generated

What r/nutrition Is For

This community is for discussing the science of nutrition. People talk about macronutrients, micronutrients, human metabolism and digestion, and nutrition news and research. The goal is civil discourse about nutrition science, not personal diet advice or food comparisons.

Rules That Matter Before Posting

The rule called "No Spam or Self Promotion" is the one that matters most for anyone doing marketing. It says you may not link to, discuss, or mention your project, website, app, or business, and anything affiliated with you is not allowed. The rule called "No Medical Context, Request, or Advice" blocks any discussion of medical conditions, procedures, treatments, or lab values. The rule called "No Dietary Activism" stops you from claiming one way of eating is better than another or comparing the relative health of different foods. The rule called "No Science Rejection or Conspiracy Theories" requires that anything conflicting with WHO recommendations needs peer reviewed evidence from within the past ten years. The rule called "Personal situations posts are NOT allowed" means you cannot post about yourself or what you eat. The rule called "Off Topic Posts" removes anything that is not about the science of nutrition, including cooking, recipes, brands, exercise, and food apps. The rule called "Account Restrictions" blocks new accounts, low karma accounts, negative karma accounts, bots, and AI generated content.

What To Post

There is no safe marketing post here. The rules ban self promotion of any kind, including links, mentions, or discussion of your project, website, app, or business. If you want to participate as a founder, the only honest path is to join as a regular person who happens to know nutrition science, share peer reviewed research from the last ten years, and never reveal any connection to your work. A good contribution would be a discussion of a recent peer reviewed study on a macronutrient or micronutrient, with the source linked and no mention of anything you built or sell. You would need an established account with real karma, and your writing must not look like it came from AI.

What To Avoid

Do not mention, link to, or hint at your product, website, app, or business in any way. Do not ask or answer medical questions, including anything about conditions, treatments, or lab values. Do not post about your own diet, what you eat, or ask for a food comparison. Do not claim one diet is better than another or vilify any dietary choice. Do not cite YouTube, blogs, or old studies, and do not contradict WHO recommendations without recent peer reviewed evidence. Do not post from a new or low karma account. Do not post anything that looks AI generated. Do not post about cooking, recipes, supermarket brands, exercise, electrolyte drinks, or food apps, because those are off topic.
