Rule summary

  • Keep it safe, friendly, fun and productive: Engage respectfully with others while answering questions and participating in technical discussions, even when disagreements arise. Do not threaten, stalk, insult, victimize, or intimidate anyone, nor incite others to engage in such behavior. Avoid excessive self-promotion and follow the spirit of Rediquette (i.e. 1 in 10 contributions should be your own content). Use the “Report” option to flag abuse in posts, comments, or replies.
  • Help and support the community: This community is a resource for sharing knowledge and helping others. As a general rule, contributions should be to benefit the community. Excessive self‑promotional content without participation (e.g. such as answering questions, offering guidance, or contributing to discussions) is considered spam. This is also not an official Microsoft support channel; and any employee views are personal and do not represent Microsoft. For official support, visit https://aka.ms/powerbiticket
  • No solicitations: We encourage members to share in‑depth knowledge of the product and integrated Partner products. Contributions must be free of promotional content, and sales activity is prohibited. This includes market research, customer discovery, or paid product validation. Applies to posts in the subreddit and unsolicited direct messages to individuals.

Works well

  • A detailed answer to a DAX or Power Query question with no link and no pitch, just a clear explanation that helps the asker.
  • A post sharing a free Power BI resource, like a template or a guide, with context on why it is useful and no sales language.
  • A discussion post about a real Power BI workflow problem you faced, how you approached it, and an invitation for others to share their methods.
  • After answering several questions over time, a post sharing your own Power BI tool or article that directly addresses a recurring question in the community, as long as it stays under the one in ten ratio.

Avoid

  • Do not post market research, customer discovery, or paid product validation here, because the rules explicitly call that out under solicitations.
  • Do not drop links without context or participation, because the community expects contributions to benefit the group, not just your funnel.
  • Do not insult, intimidate, or threaten anyone, even in a heated technical disagreement, because the first rule demands respectful engagement.
  • Do not treat this subreddit as an official Microsoft support channel or expect Microsoft employees to represent the company here.

What r/PowerBI Is For

This community is for sharing news, resources, and knowledge about Power BI. People come here to ask questions, answer questions, and take part in technical discussions about the product and its integrated partner products. It is a place to help others and benefit the community, not an official Microsoft support channel.

Rules That Matter Before Posting

The first rule, "Keep it safe, friendly, fun and productive", sets the tone for every interaction and explicitly mentions avoiding excessive self-promotion with a one in ten ratio. The second rule, "Help and support the community", reinforces that contributions should benefit the group and labels excessive self-promotion without participation as spam. The third rule, "No solicitations", is the one that will catch most marketers off guard because it bans sales activity, market research, customer discovery, and paid product validation outright.

What To Post

A good post here is a genuine contribution to the Power BI community. You could share a useful resource, answer a technical question in detail, or start a discussion about a real problem you solved with the product. If you are a founder, the best move is to participate like a user first, answer questions, and only occasionally share your own content when it directly helps someone. Keep your self-promotion to less than ten percent of your total contributions, and make sure everything you post benefits the community.

What To Avoid

Avoid anything that looks like a sales pitch, market research, customer discovery, or paid product validation, because the "No solicitations" rule bans all of it. Do not post promotional content without also answering questions, offering guidance, or joining discussions, since the "Help and support the community" rule calls that spam. Stay away from insults, threats, intimidation, or any disrespectful behavior, because the "Keep it safe, friendly, fun and productive" rule will get you removed. Also remember this is not an official Microsoft support channel, so do not frame your posts as if it is.

Common questions about r/PowerBI

Can I share a link to my Power BI tool or resource?

Yes, links are allowed, but you need to follow the one in ten contribution ratio and avoid excessive self-promotion without active community participation.

Can I run a survey or customer discovery interview here?

No. The rules prohibit market research, customer discovery, and paid product validation under the no solicitations rule.

Can I promote my own content at all?

Yes, but keep it to less than ten percent of your total contributions and make sure you are also answering questions and joining discussions.

Is this a place to get official Microsoft support?

No. The rules state this is not an official Microsoft support channel and any employee views are personal, not company positions.

What happens if I get into a technical argument with someone?

Engage respectfully in technical discussions, avoid insults or intimidation, and contribute to benefit the community rather than just yourself.
