Rule summary

  • Accepted topics: Our community is focused on providing useful information for travellers to Paris. We welcome questions, trip reports, write-ups of tips and advice, draft itineraries, and the like. Please keep discussions on-topic in comments. Brief tangents are OK, but we ask that you please refrain from holding extended discussions on other topics. You are welcome to continue discussions in Reddit Chat.
  • Minimum writing standards: All posts and comments must meet these standards: * English or French only. Other languages must be translated _before_ posting. Translations may be made with a translation tool, but not a generative AI tool. * Titles must be descriptive. No vague or general titles such as “Need Help” or “Paris Trip”. * Use formatting responsibly. Do not excessively use all-caps, symbols, emojis, bold or headings. * Long posts must have paragraph breaks for readability. “Walls of text” are prohibited.
  • Prohibited topics: **No illegal content.** No content or questions regarding illegal drugs, entering non-public areas of the Catacombs, or any other illegal topics. **No sales/giveaways/transfers of tickets.** Allowed only on the monthly General megathread, and only if the tickets have _no_ official resale platform.
  • Be respectful to each other / No call-outs: Our goal is to foster positive and helpful interactions between contributors. Any behaviour contrary to this goal is prohibited, such as insults, harassment or passive-aggressiveness. There is **no exception** for calling out or retaliating against other disrespectful users. * If you see something you don't like, downvote and move on. * If you have a problem with someone, **stop immediately** and use the report button, or message the moderators. Otherwise, you will be held equally culpable.
  • Use of the monthly General Questions thread: The monthly General Questions megathread (pinned post) must be used for: * Simple questions that do not encourage discussion (such as yes/no questions) * Commonly-asked questions * Minor questions (i.e. the type you would delete after receiving an answer) * Resale of tickets for attractions or events that _do not_ have an official ticket resale platform. Moderators reserve the right to redirect questions to the monthly thread at their discretion.
  • Effort requirements: Please read the text on the pinned monthly megathread for our expectations when posting. Posts that demonstrate little to no prior research effort or ask simple/common questions may be removed at the moderators' discretion. If you have a simple, common, or minor question, please post it in the comments of the monthly megathread.
  • Post flairs and topic-specific rules: The following post flairs have special rules and can only be used in certain cases: * Review My Itinerary * Photo/Video * Trip Report * Tips & Advice * Small Events & Opportunities Before you post, please refer to our [**post flairs page**](/r/ParisTravelGuide/wiki/about/post-flairs/) for information on our flair-specific rules. Moderators are not always able to correct misflaired posts. If your post is removed for a flair-related issue, you are welcome to post again.
  • No AI-generated content: We do not allow any AI-generated content on this community, **even if you disclose it**. This includes using AI to generate: * posts or comments * "Review My Itinerary" itineraries, even if just for formatting/style * retellings of a story/experience, even if the story is real * translations of text into English/French * images/videos, including touch-ups/modifications to existing media Reposts of AI-generated content are also prohibited.
  • Rules for media (images and videos): Images and videos are highly regulated on this subreddit. * No clickbait. All photos/videos must serve a purpose within your post or comment. * You must include relevant descriptions and/or body text. * Photos and videos must respect [**France's droit à l'image**](https://www.service-public.gouv.fr/particuliers/vosdroits/F32103?lang=en). * Posts primarily featuring photos/videos must follow the [**Photo/Video flair rules**](/r/ParisTravelGuide/wiki/about/post-flairs/).
  • Rules for posting links: We do not allow links that contain a question mark (`?`). Before posting any links, you must delete the question mark and everything after it. Most links still work after you do this; if not, contact the moderators to request an exemption. No link shorteners, links generated from "share" buttons, links that redirect (unless a direct link doesn't work), or affiliate links.
  • Advertising/self-promotion is limited: Directing to, mentioning, or promoting your own content, products, apps, services, or other subreddits is prohibited, except: * You may promote small, in-person events/opportunities under the **Small Events & Opportunities** post flair. [**Conditions apply.**](/r/ParisTravelGuide/wiki/about/post-flairs/). * Users with at least 2 croissants on their user flair are partially exempt from this rule. See our user flair information section on our community sidebar page for details.
  • Maximum posting limits / No karma farming: To allow everyone equal opportunity to post, we enforce the following limits per user: * Maximum 2 posts per 24 hours. * Reposts of your own posts are not allowed within the first 24 hours. * Maximum 1 "Link" post or repost per 24 hours. * Maximum 2 Photo/Video posts _per week_ (7 days). Using an alt account to post in excess of these limits will result in a ban. We reserve the right to remove low-effort karma farming posts.
  • No politics, trolling or extreme fearmongering: Do not troll, deliberately provoke other users, or repeatedly make exaggerated or unnecessarily alarming claims. Disagreement, criticism, and discussion of negative experiences are welcome, but contributions should be made constructively and in good faith. We will remove any content that appears to provoke, alarm, derail discussion, or repeatedly present exceptional or hypothetical situations as though they are representative of ordinary travel.
  • Miscellaneous policies: Here are some additional miscellaneous (but important) rules: * Don't participate on this subreddit with multiple accounts, especially in a deceptive way. * Don't move discussions off the subreddit (e.g. into chat or off Reddit) to harass or advertise to other contributors. * Please use mod mail for all moderation concerns or questions.

Works well

  • A detailed trip report from your own Paris trip, posted under the Trip Report flair with a descriptive title and short paragraphs
  • A tips and advice write-up on a niche Paris topic, like a neighbourhood you explored or a mistake you made planning your days
  • A draft itinerary posted under Review My Itinerary, written entirely by you, asking for specific feedback on your choices
  • A small in-person Paris event or opportunity posted under the Small Events & Opportunities flair, after reading that flair's conditions
  • A helpful cleaned link, with the question mark and everything after it deleted, posted as your one allowed link post of the day

Avoid

  • Posting anything written, translated, polished, or formatted with AI, because “No AI-generated content” bans it even when you disclose it
  • Dropping your product link or app name into a comment or post, which “Advertising/self-promotion is limited” prohibits
  • Sharing a link with a question mark, tracking tail, share button URL, redirect, or affiliate tag, which “Rules for posting links” rejects
  • Titling your post “Need Help” or “Paris Trip”, which “Minimum writing standards” calls out as too vague
  • Dumping one giant unbroken paragraph, since “Minimum writing standards” bans walls of text
  • Asking a simple yes/no or commonly-asked question as a standalone post instead of in the monthly megathread, per “Use of the monthly General Questions thread” and “Effort requirements”

What r/ParisTravelGuide Is For

This is a community for Paris lovers and first-timers who are planning a trip to the city, whether they want the tourist classics or the off the beaten path stuff. People post itinerary reviews, trip reports, write-ups of tips and advice, niche questions, and advice from locals and experienced travellers, in English or French. The rules make it clear this is a help-first room, not a marketplace. Simple and common questions belong in the monthly General Questions megathread, while the main feed is for posts that show real effort, like a draft itinerary or a detailed trip report. If you are a founder here, you are a traveller first and a builder second, and the community expects you to contribute useful Paris knowledge rather than pitch anything.

Rules That Matter Before Posting

The rule that decides everything for a founder is “Advertising/self-promotion is limited”, which prohibits directing to, mentioning, or promoting your own content, products, apps, or services, with only two openings. The first opening is the “Small Events & Opportunities” post flair for small in-person events, and the second is a partial exemption for users with at least 2 croissants on their user flair. “No AI-generated content” bans AI-written posts, AI translations, and even AI-formatted itineraries, even if you disclose the AI use. “Rules for posting links” bans links with a question mark, link shorteners, share-button links, redirects, and affiliate links, so any link you share must be cleaned first. “Effort requirements” and “Use of the monthly General Questions thread” push simple and common questions into the monthly megathread, which matters because a thin promotional post looks exactly like a low-effort post. “Minimum writing standards” demands descriptive titles, responsible formatting, and paragraph breaks in long posts. “Post flairs and topic-specific rules” means you must check the flair rules before using flairs like Trip Report or Tips & Advice. “Maximum posting limits / No karma farming” caps you at 2 posts per 24 hours and 1 link post per 24 hours. Finally, “Rules for media” and “Prohibited topics” close off clickbait photos and anything illegal, including the Catacombs.

What To Post

The honest answer is that there is almost no room to market here, so think of this as a place to build trust rather than traffic. A good post is a genuine trip report or a tips and advice write-up with a descriptive title, clear paragraphs, and no mention of your own product. If you have a draft Paris itinerary, the Review My Itinerary flair is the natural fit, but the itinerary must be written by you and not generated or formatted by AI. If you run a small in-person event or opportunity related to Paris, the Small Events & Opportunities flair is the one sanctioned path, and you must read its conditions on the post flairs page first. If you want to share a helpful article or map, clean the link first by deleting the question mark and everything after it, and remember you get at most 1 link post per 24 hours. Simple questions go in the monthly megathread, not the feed. If you plan to be a regular, look into the user flair system, because at least 2 croissants gives a partial exemption from the self-promotion rule.

What To Avoid

The fastest removal is self-promotion, because “Advertising/self-promotion is limited” prohibits mentioning your own content, products, apps, or services, and there is no exception for doing it subtly. Do not use AI to write, translate, or format anything, since “No AI-generated content” bans it even with disclosure. Do not post a link with a question mark or tracking tail, because “Rules for posting links” requires you to delete the question mark and everything after it, and also bans shorteners, share links, redirects, and affiliate links. Do not post vague titles like “Need Help” or “Paris Trip”, and do not post walls of text without paragraph breaks, because “Minimum writing standards” prohibits both. Do not ask a simple yes/no or commonly-asked question as a standalone post, because “Use of the monthly General Questions thread” and “Effort requirements” send those to the megathread. Do not repost your own post within 24 hours or exceed the limits in “Maximum posting limits / No karma farming”. Do not use multiple accounts, do not move discussions off the subreddit to advertise to people, and do not post clickbait photos without descriptions, per “Rules for media” and “Miscellaneous policies”.

Common questions about r/ParisTravelGuide

Can I promote my travel app or service here?

Not directly. “Advertising/self-promotion is limited” prohibits promoting your own content, products, apps, or services, with the only openings being the Small Events & Opportunities flair for small in-person events and a partial exemption for users with at least 2 croissants on their user flair.

Can I use AI to write or translate my post?

No. “No AI-generated content” bans AI-written posts, AI-formatted itineraries, and AI translations, even if you disclose the AI use.

What is the one sanctioned way to get visibility here?

Only if it is a small in-person event or opportunity, and only under the Small Events & Opportunities flair, whose conditions are listed on the community's post flairs page.

Can I post a trip report that subtly features my product?

Yes, if it is a genuine trip report or tips and advice write-up that meets the flair rules, but the post cannot mention or direct people to your own product, per “Advertising/self-promotion is limited”.

How do I share a link safely?

Delete the question mark and everything after it before posting. “Rules for posting links” also bans shorteners, share-button links, redirects, and affiliate links.
